Aeration 

What is aeration? 

• • Aeration is the process of creating pockets or slices in the ground that allow the soil to absorb air, water, and nutrients better.  At Rockwell Earthworks, we only utilize the core process that creates pockets in the ground, producing the best results. 

Why do I need to have my lawn aerated? 

• • There are several leading causes of yards that need aeration, but regardless of the reason, the result is your soil has become compacted. Different soil compositions, especially soil heavy in clay content, require aeration more frequently to loosen the soil. Eventually, regardless of the soil type, the ground will become compacted from traffic on the turf in your yard. Animals, humans, and mowers all contribute to compaction over time. 

What are the signs my lawn needs aeration? 

• • Lawn will be hard underfoot 
  • Grass is discolored or thin
  • Water pools on the yard after a rain
  • Your yard has not been aerated within the last five years 

What are the benefits of aeration? 

• • Lets soil and the roots of your grass receive the air, water, and nutrients they need.

Scarification 

What is scarification? 

• • Scarification is the process of scrapping or raking the soil. Routine scarification lightly scratches the top of the soil, where occasionally deep scarification may need to be done to remove excess organic material. 

Why do I need to have my lawn scarified? 

• • If your yard has moss growing in it, a very thick layer of thatch, or has been poorly maintained, you may need to have your yard scarified.  

What are the benefits of scarification? 

• • Encourages upright growth habit
  • Controls organic matter build-up 
  • Removes moss and creeping lateral growth
